Catio Size Guide: How Big Should a Catio Be?

Catio Size Guide: How Big Should a Catio Be?

"How big should my catio be?" is one of the first questions people ask, and the honest answer is that it depends on your cats, your space and how they'll use it. A compact catio on a balcony can be a cat's favorite spot, while a big walk-in enclosure suits a multi-cat household with a garden. This guide helps you work out the right size, measure your space and avoid the most common sizing mistakes.

Think in three dimensions

Floor area is only part of the story. Cats live vertically, so a tall, narrow catio with several platforms often feels bigger to a cat than a wide, low one. When you compare catios, look at:

  • Footprint: the floor space it takes up.
  • Height: how many levels your cats can climb to.
  • Platforms and resting spots: how many cats can perch at once without crowding.
  • Access: whether you can reach in, or walk in, to clean and play.

A rough guide by number of cats

There's no official standard, but these rules of thumb work well:

  • One cat, part-time use: a compact catio with three or four levels is usually enough, especially if your cat spends a few hours a day in it.
  • Two cats: choose more platforms than cats, plus at least one enclosed resting box, so each cat has its own spot.
  • Three or more cats: a walk-in catio or large cat run works best. More floor space and multiple high perches help avoid squabbles.
  • All-day access through a cat door: go bigger. A catio your cats use for hours needs shade, shelter, a resting box and room to move.

A useful rule: one more perch than you have cats, and at least two ways up and down.

Catio sizes at a glance

  • Compact and rolling catios fit balconies, decks and small patios. Our 4-Tier Outdoor Catio on Wheels is about 24.4 x 23.4 inches across and 62.6 inches tall, with four levels and a waterproof roof, and it rolls wherever the sun is.
  • Window box catios attach outside a window, so they need almost no ground space. The Window Box Catio has five platforms and two lounging boxes. Measure your window opening before ordering.
  • Large wooden catios suit gardens and multi-cat homes. Our Large Wooden Catio 73" Tall is about 63 x 31.5 inches across and 73 inches tall, with seven platforms and two resting boxes.
  • Cat runs and big enclosures give the most floor space for active cats. See the Heavy-Duty Outdoor Cat Run and our 110" Large Outdoor Cat Enclosure.

How to measure your space

  1. Mark the footprint. Use masking tape or string on the ground to outline the catio. Leave space around it so you can reach the doors.
  2. Check the height. Measure up to any roof, eave, balcony ceiling or window ledge above.
  3. Measure doors and paths. Make sure flat-packed boxes and your own body can get to the spot. For walk-in catios, check that you can open the door fully.
  4. Measure the window or cat door. If the catio will connect to your home, note where the opening is and how high it sits.
  5. Check the ground. A level, firm surface makes assembly easier and keeps the catio stable.

Placement matters as much as size

  • Shade: cats love sun, but every catio needs a shaded area, especially in summer.
  • Shelter: a roof or covered section protects against rain and wind.
  • A view: birds, trees and garden activity keep cats interested for hours.
  • Quiet: away from loud machinery, busy roads and neighborhood dogs.
  • Balconies: check your building's rules and keep heavy items within safe load limits.

Common sizing mistakes

  • Buying for today, not tomorrow. If you might add a second cat, size up now.
  • Forgetting access. You'll need to clean litter, refill water and remove leaves, so make sure you can reach every level.
  • No resting spot. A catio without a box or covered shelf won't get much use in hot or wet weather.
  • Too few exits. Single routes up and down can cause standoffs between cats.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good size for a catio?

For one cat, a compact catio with three or four levels works well. For two or more cats, choose a larger catio with more platforms than cats and at least one resting box.

Can a small catio be enough?

Yes. Many cats are very happy in a compact catio, especially when it has several levels, a resting spot and a good view.

How tall should a catio be?

Taller is better for cats, since height adds climbing space without using more ground. Make sure you can still reach the top level to clean it.

Do I need a walk-in catio?

Not always, but walk-in catios are easier to clean and great for multi-cat homes, as you can step inside to play and tidy up.

Can I put a catio on a balcony?

Often, yes. Choose a compact or rolling catio, check your building's rules and keep the total weight within safe limits.
